This higher education center commenced its educational activities in 1977 as the northern branch of Jundi-Shapur University of Ahvaz (Shahid Chamran). In 1979, the Lorestan branch separated from Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz and continued its activities under the title of Lorestan Higher Education Complex with four academic departments: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. In 1993, coinciding with the Supreme Leader's visit to Lorestan province, it was practically and officially upgraded from a complex to a university.
Lorestan University currently comprises 8 faculties: Basic Sciences, Engineering, Literature and Humanities, Economics and Administration, Agriculture, Natural Resources, Veterinary Medicine, Chemistry, and 4 affiliated higher education centers in the cities of Nurabad, Aleshtar, Kuhdasht, and Poldokhtar.
The university currently has 405 faculty members, including 60 professors, 126 associate professors, 204 assistant professors, and 15 instructors.
It also offers degree programs at the Bachelor's, Master's, Doctoral, and Postdoctoral levels. Of these, there are 807 Ph.D. students, 1916 Master's students, 4876 Bachelor's students, 227 general doctoral students, and 11 postdoctoral students. Currently, 7837 students are enrolled in various programs at this university.
